Beginning on march 15 2011 only dogs are recognized as service animals under titles ii and iii of the ada.

The disabilities can vary greatly and so do the tasks that the service dogs perform. A service animal means any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability including a physical sensory psychiatric intellectual or other mental disability. If the dog has been trained to sense that an anxiety attack is about to happen and take a specific action to help avoid the attack or lessen its impact that would qualify as a service animal. Otherwise their handlers will find themselves having to explain everywhere that they go that their dog is a service dog. Service dogs are often identified by wearing a service dog vest or tag letting the public know that it is a service dog.
